Finding an ASU Clinical Preceptor in Arizona

Arizona has used full NP practice authority since 2001. Licensed NPs may assess, diagnose, order and interpret testing, and manage treatment, including prescribing, under the Arizona State Board of Nursing without a required physician collaboration agreement.

The framework supports NP-owned primary care and psychiatric practices alongside advanced practice roles in major health systems. An NP may consider teaching without maintaining a physician contract merely to practice, though the employer or site can still control student access.

Full practice describes the licensed preceptor, not the ASU student. The learner remains supervised, and Edson evaluates whether the clinician, population focus, setting, patients, and schedule satisfy the course. An independent FNP does not automatically fit acute care or psychiatric objectives.

The Edson placement model is location-sensitive. Students outside Maricopa County are responsible for identifying the sites and preceptors needed for clinical education. Edson retains approval authority, and the site must be approved before the student starts clinical work.

Students in Maricopa County receive assigned placements. Exceptions, if available, follow the current Edson process. The safest plan is to verify the county rule and course instructions before contacting a clinician, since a private commitment may not fit the university's placement workflow.

When the student must source a placement, the request should be built around the course rather than a general desire to observe. Include concentration, dates, population, setting, weekly availability, and travel range. Continue communicating with Edson while the clinician and site information is reviewed.

The Arizona State Board of Nursing is the official source for license status, advanced practice requirements, renewal, and discipline in Arizona. Review the public record early. A clinic biography may omit a recent credential or authority change that matters to Edson's review.

State verification is one screening step. Edson separately evaluates the preceptor and site for the specific course. Ask whether the practice accepts outside students, who controls student access, and whether the clinician can provide the required patients, supervision, schedule, and evaluation.

Arizona has a special ASU placement distinction. In Maricopa County, clinical placements are assigned, with any exceptions controlled by the current Edson process. Students should not independently commit to a local site unless current instructions permit it. Outside Maricopa County, the student-led identification rule applies.

A physical placement needs a commute the student can sustain for the entire course. A virtual proposal needs equal attention to patient location, supervision, technology, privacy, and site policy. Screening the population and setting first prevents a convenient but unusable clinician from consuming the approval window.

ASU's Advanced Nursing Practice DNP includes key NP concentrations in FNP, PMHNP, adult-gerontology, and women's health. The current FNP program plan commonly totals up to 1,125 clinical and residency hours, including 585 specialty practicum hours. Confirm both figures against the current program of study, concentration, and catalog before planning.

Other concentration totals vary and should not be inferred from the FNP plan. A student's course sequence, residency activities, population focus, and current catalog determine the actual requirement. Use clinical hours as an organizing guide, then verify the official plan with Edson.

The nursing programs are accredited by CCNE, and ASU is institutionally accredited by HLC. Those credentials do not settle whether a proposed site fits a course. Confirm current state eligibility and placement rules for the student's program without assuming that a state guide authorizes enrollment or practicum.

Hybrid delivery means students should plan for required activities in Phoenix as well as clinical work. The program is not fully online. A physical clinical setting remains the standard route for direct patient experience and supervision.
