How Edson College site approval works

Because ASU does not count hours at a site it has not vetted. Edson College must approve your sites before you start any clinical experience, so a preceptor who agrees to take you is necessary but not sufficient: the site and preceptor still have to clear ASU's process before a single practicum hour is logged. This protects the program's accreditation and its students, and it is the reason a self-sourced placement is really two jobs, finding the site and getting it approved.

It also means the site itself, not just the preceptor, has to be on board with ASU's paperwork. Many practices will host a student informally but balk at signing an affiliation agreement or returning credential forms, and that gap, not a shortage of willing preceptors, is where self-sourced placements most often die. Screening for a site that will actually complete the approval steps is as important as finding a preceptor who says yes.

Nothing, by ASU's own statement. The Doctor of Nursing Practice program office does not guarantee a clinical placement site for any student outside Maricopa County. In-county students get help arranging focused clinical experiences; out-of-county students, which is most online and out-of-state students, carry the search themselves and then submit their sites for approval. Approval is not sourcing: Edson reviews what you bring, it does not find it for you.

For an out-of-county student that changes how you should plan. With no fallback placement waiting, the consequence of a stalled search or a rejected site falls entirely on your calendar, so the safe move is to start early and to bring Edson a site that is clearly, obviously approvable rather than one you are hoping squeaks through. Removing that risk from your timeline is the core of what our service does.

Faculty judgment can. ASU's policy states that if, during the program, faculty determine a student needs additional supervision for clinical progress, the student must complete clinical experiences in the Phoenix area. For an out-of-county student that is a meaningful risk, because it can mean moving rotations across the state on short notice, and it is one more reason to secure a strong, clearly approvable local site from the outset rather than a borderline one.
