Create a sustainable ASU clinical plan in Montana

AANP identifies Montana as a full practice state. Nurse practitioners can assess patients, diagnose, order and interpret tests, manage treatment, and prescribe within state law and their credentials. NPs serve metropolitan, regional, community, and rural settings.

Full practice does not mean a student works independently. ASU students remain under an approved preceptor and follow the course and facility rules. Montana NPs consult other professionals when patient needs require it, even though general authority is broad.

Ask about patient ages, visit types, preceptor presence, supervision, and seasonal volume. Confirm current ASU program eligibility in Montana before committing to travel or temporary lodging.

The Montana Board of Nursing operates through the Department of Labor and Industry. Its official website provides licensing, advanced practice, rules, applications, and credential services. Search the preceptor by exact legal name and confirm active nursing and APRN authority.

Then verify national certification, specialty, patient population, current role, and practice address. The state record confirms authority, while Edson evaluates the proposed clinician, site, supervision, and course activities.

Billings has the state's largest clinical concentration, including systems, outpatient groups, behavioral health, primary care, and specialties. Missoula, Great Falls, Bozeman, Helena, Butte, and Kalispell offer other useful markets.

Havre, Lewistown, Glendive, and Miles City can serve regional searches. Students farther from those hubs may need a concentrated schedule, temporary lodging, or a wider drive radius. Weather, provider coverage, and the limited number of alternatives should be considered.

Send the concentration, course, patients, dates, schedule, and requested preceptor information. Ask who manages students and whether a system education office or local administrator controls the decision.

Montana is outside Maricopa County, so students identify required clinical sites and preceptors under the current Edson process. Start with professional contacts and local clinicians, then expand along travel corridors that remain workable for the full term.

Edson must approve the proposed site and preceptor before clinical work begins. The Montana facility may add health records, screening, training, orientation, or local credentialing. School review and site onboarding both need completion.

In Maricopa County, placements are generally assigned, with exceptions governed by current Edson procedures. Montana students should follow the out-of-county pathway and review the clinical placement policy for current steps.

Create a separate plan for the primary site and the next workable region. Record the exact clinic address, patient population, preceptor availability, facility contact, onboarding requirements, and weather-sensitive travel days. In Montana, replacing one unavailable clinician may require changing cities rather than contacting another office nearby.

Ask the practice how it handles provider leave, low census, and road closures. A schedule with designated backup days is more realistic than one that assumes every planned clinic day will occur. Any adjustment still needs to remain within the approved Edson arrangement. Report material schedule changes to the appropriate Edson contact promptly.

ASU's Advanced Nursing Practice DNP includes key NP concentrations in FNP, PMHNP, adult-gerontology, and women's health. The current FNP plan totals up to 1,125 clinical and residency hours, including 585 specialty practicum hours. Other totals vary, so confirm the current program of study, concentration, and catalog.

Plan by course and discuss eligible patients, daily volume, preceptor leave, holidays, weather closures, and backup days. A rural clinic may offer broad exposure but still need enough patients and consistent supervision for the assigned objectives.

Keep clinical tracking and compliance systems generic and follow ASU's current tools. A workable plan combines approved activities, reliable attendance, and accurate documentation.

The ASU program is hybrid with required Phoenix activities. It is never fully online. Montana students should include Phoenix travel on the same calendar as the local clinical commitment.
