AANP classifies North Dakota as a full practice state. Nurse practitioners may evaluate patients, diagnose, order and interpret tests, and manage treatment under the authority of the North Dakota Board of Nursing. A career-long physician collaboration agreement is not the basis of ordinary NP practice in the state.
Independent offices, NP-owned practices, rural clinics, and health system sites can all be considered. Full practice does not make every provider a course match. The clinician still needs the correct population focus, patient volume, schedule, site resources, and willingness to teach.
Students remain supervised during clinical education. The preceptor's licensed autonomy does not transfer to the learner. ASU course objectives, the approved site, and the supervision plan define what the student may do.
Use the North Dakota Board of Nursing before outreach advances
The North Dakota Board of Nursing licenses RNs and APRNs and provides official credential information. Confirm the prospective preceptor's active APRN status, role, population focus, and public record. Use official state resources rather than relying only on a clinic profile.
Then check the educational fit. An FNP, psychiatric NP, adult-gerontology provider, and women's health clinician offer different patient populations. Ask for a current CV, confirm the weekly schedule, and identify who at the practice authorizes students. Edson reviews the site and preceptor as an academic arrangement, not merely a license.
Search Fargo, Bismarck, and regional North Dakota deliberately
Fargo and West Fargo offer the state's broadest concentration of primary care, pediatrics, behavioral health, specialty medicine, and hospital services. Bismarck and Mandan form another strong central market. Grand Forks supports regional and academic care, and Minot anchors north-central options.
Dickinson and Williston are important western centers. Rural and critical access practices can offer close teaching and broad continuity, but small teams may have limited student capacity. Ask about the patients seen on the proposed weekdays and whether winter cancellations affect volume.
Calculate travel for repeated early shifts rather than one interview. Confirm current ASU program eligibility for clinical activity in North Dakota, and discuss any Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana, or Canadian site with Edson before treating it as part of the same plan.
Edson's placement policy depends on where the clinical site is
The Advanced Nursing Practice DNP uses a location-specific placement process. Students completing required clinical experiences outside Maricopa County identify the needed clinical sites and preceptors. The Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation must approve those arrangements before clinical work begins.
Within Maricopa County, placements are assigned under the current Edson process, with exceptions controlled by Edson. That local assignment rule should not be read as a nationwide placement promise. For a North Dakota experience, work from the outside-county sourcing process and confirm the current steps, deadlines, forms, and credential expectations with the program.
A clinician's interest is only the first part. The practice may require its own background documents, health records, privacy training, or student agreement. Keep Edson review and site onboarding on one calendar, and do not schedule clinical activity until both sides are complete.
Plan North Dakota rotations from the current program of study
ASU's Advanced Nursing Practice DNP includes key NP concentrations in FNP, PMHNP, adult-gerontology, and women's health. The current FNP plan totals up to 1,125 clinical and residency hours, including 585 specialty practicum hours. Confirm those figures against the current program of study and catalog because course sequencing and student plans can change.
Other concentration totals vary, so use the current concentration plan rather than applying the FNP numbers. FNP needs lifespan primary care, PMHNP needs psychiatric scope and patient access, adult-gerontology requires the appropriate age and care setting, and women's health needs a practice with relevant patients and services.
The program is hybrid, with required Phoenix activities in addition to local clinical work. It is not fully online. Put Phoenix dates, North Dakota travel, site onboarding, and clinical shifts on the same calendar before reserving a preceptor.
