Planning an Oregon Preceptor Search for ASU DNP Clinicals

Oregon is a full practice state where nurse practitioners may independently diagnose and prescribe within their preparation and competence. ASU students still need a specialty-correct site and Edson approval before clinical work.

Oregon full practice expands possible clinical settings

AANP categorizes Oregon as a full practice state. The Oregon State Board of Nursing describes nurse practitioner authority as independently diagnosing illness and prescribing treatment within the provider's license type, education, and competence. Oregon does not require a physician collaboration agreement for ordinary NP practice.

Independent offices, NP-led clinics, community health organizations, and health systems can all enter the search. Full practice does not remove population focus or site policy. A clinician still needs the right patients, schedule, resources, and teaching capacity.

Students remain supervised. The preceptor's professional autonomy does not transfer to the learner. ASU course objectives, the site, and the approved supervision plan control the clinical role.

Use Oregon State Board of Nursing records for screening

The Oregon State Board of Nursing licenses nurses and APRNs, interprets the Nurse Practice Act, and maintains public credential information. Verify the proposed NP's active status, role, specialty, and public record before requesting a full candidate file.

Then confirm educational fit. Ask about patient ages, common diagnoses, clinical setting, weekly volume, and supervision. Request a current CV and identify who can authorize students and provide site documentation during Edson review.

Follow Oregon's clinical corridors

Portland has the state's deepest mix of primary, psychiatric, women's health, specialty, and hospital care. Extend outreach through Beaverton, Hillsboro, Gresham, Tigard, and Oregon City. Salem and the mid-Willamette Valley form another active market, with Eugene-Springfield and Corvallis adding options farther south.

Bend and Redmond anchor Central Oregon. Medford, Central Point, Grants Pass, and Ashland form the southern corridor. Coastal and eastern students may need to search near Astoria, Newport, Coos Bay, Pendleton, Hermiston, or La Grande and accept a wider travel radius.

Ask about student cycles and organizational approval. Confirm current ASU eligibility for Oregon clinical activity. A Washington, Idaho, Nevada, or California site is a separate location for Edson review.

Use the correct Edson process for an Oregon placement

ASU's Advanced Nursing Practice DNP distinguishes clinical placement by location. Students completing required experiences outside Maricopa County identify their own sites and preceptors. Edson reviews and must approve the proposed Oregon arrangement before the student begins clinical work.

Within Maricopa County, placements are assigned under the current Edson process, with exceptions controlled by Edson. That policy does not assign an Oregon placement. Confirm the current outside-county submission sequence, deadlines, credentials, and concentration-specific rules with the program.

Oregon sites may require background documents, health records, privacy education, or organizational agreements. Start those tasks alongside Edson review and keep the site contact informed. The preceptor and practice both need to be ready for the intended term.

Fit Oregon sites to the DNP concentration and schedule

The Advanced Nursing Practice DNP includes key NP concentrations in FNP, PMHNP, adult-gerontology, and women's health. The current FNP plan totals up to 1,125 clinical and residency hours, including 585 specialty practicum hours. Confirm those figures, quarter timing, and course settings through the current program of study and catalog.

Other concentration totals vary. Community practices may support family or adult-gerontology objectives, while psychiatric and women's health courses need the appropriate specialty and patient access. A Portland health system may offer depth but longer onboarding, while a regional practice may provide continuity with fewer specialty backups.

ASU's program is hybrid and includes required Phoenix activities. It is not fully online. Plan Phoenix travel, Oregon shifts, site onboarding, and the possibility of multiple preceptors on the same calendar.

Compare physical placement and virtual preceptorship

We source physical placements and virtual preceptorship routes. A physical route searches Oregon by specialty and sustainable travel. A virtual route may involve supervised telehealth only when the course, site, state, patient location, preceptor setup, and Edson acceptance permit it. Confirm accepted activity before relying on remote care.

Oregon geography makes weekly planning important. Portland-area options, Willamette Valley practices, Central Oregon sites, and southern communities can require very different drive commitments. A virtual proposal should identify the clinical organization, patient locations, supervision plan, and types of encounters. Edson can then compare the actual arrangement with the concentration and current course expectations.

Students see the match before payment and pay only when a placement is secured. Pricing belongs on the cost page. Edson retains academic approval of the site and preceptor.

Send your concentration, course, Oregon region, travel radius, available days, and target term through a free placement review. We will assess likely physical and virtual options.

Questions

Good to know

Is Oregon a full practice state?

Yes. AANP classifies Oregon as full practice, and the Board describes independent diagnosis and treatment authority within preparation and competence.

Does ASU assign Oregon preceptors?

For required clinical experiences outside Maricopa County, students identify the site and preceptor. Edson must approve the arrangement before clinical work.

Which Oregon regions offer preceptor options?

Portland, Salem, Eugene-Springfield, Bend, and Medford are useful anchors. Coastal, eastern, and regional practices can add options based on specialty and travel.

Can an Oregon placement include telehealth?

It may include supervised telehealth when the course, site, state, patient location, preceptor setup, and Edson acceptance allow it. Confirm accepted activity first.
