If you live outside Maricopa County you are responsible for finding the site yourself, and Edson College has to approve it before you start. What NUR 464 actually asks for
The capstone is not a written assignment with a clinical label attached. NUR 464 is a four-credit culminating course that asks you to synthesize evidence, leadership and population health into a real-world project or practicum addressing an identified practice need. The phrase that matters there is identified practice need: you are expected to find a real problem, in a real setting, with a real clinician willing to oversee your work on it.
That is a different search from an NP rotation. You are not looking for a prescriber with panel capacity. You are looking for a setting with a problem worth solving and someone in it who will supervise you solving it.
The Maricopa County line
This is the rule that decides how hard your search will be. If you are inside Maricopa County, ASU's own network does much of the work. If you live outside it, you are responsible for identifying the clinical sites in your area and for finding preceptors and sites willing to accommodate you, and Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation must approve those sites before any clinical experience begins.
Most online RN-to-BSN students are outside that county line. If that is you, the placement is yours to solve, and the approval step means solving it early rather than in the week before the term.
Approval comes before you start, not after
Edson must approve the site before any clinical experience begins. A preceptor who has verbally agreed is not an approved placement, and hours accrued before approval are hours you may not be able to count. Build the calendar backwards from the approval, not forwards from the handshake.
Where RN-to-BSN capstone work actually happens
Because the course integrates evidence, leadership and population health, the settings that suit it are broader than a clinical rotation. In practice, capstone projects land in places like these:
Your own employer
The most common route, and often the strongest. You already know the practice need, you already have access, and the leadership relationship exists. The supervising clinician generally should not be your direct manager.
Public and community health
County health departments, community clinics and outreach programmes fit the population-health half of the capstone naturally, and they tend to welcome a student working on a real problem.
Quality and process improvement
A hospital quality department or a unit-level improvement project gives you a measurable practice need and a leader positioned to supervise it.
Education and staff development
Onboarding, competency and staff-education projects sit squarely inside the leadership outcomes the capstone is assessing.
Who can precept it
Preceptor qualifications for the capstone are set by Edson and by the course, and they are not the same as the requirements for an NP clinical rotation. Confirm the accepted credentials with your course faculty before you commit to a person, because a willing supervisor who does not meet the course's criteria costs you the term rather than saving it. What is consistent across settings is that the preceptor has to be positioned to oversee the work you are actually doing, and the site has to be one Edson will approve.

Can I use my workplace?
Usually the best option, provided the supervising clinician is not your direct manager and the setting fits the practice need you have identified. Confirm the arrangement with faculty before you begin.
I am outside Arizona entirely
That is the normal case for an online RN-to-BSN and it does not change the requirement. The site still needs Edson approval, and the search is still yours unless someone runs it for you.
When should I start?
Before the term you intend to register for. The approval step, not the search, is what sets your timeline.
Is this the same as an NP rotation?
No. NP tracks at ASU are DNP-level with their own hour requirements. The capstone is a project-based culminating experience, so the site and the supervisor are chosen against different criteria.
