Full practice expands the Utah candidate pool
AANP classifies Utah as a full practice state. Qualified nurse practitioners can provide core patient care within their education, certification, licensure, competence, and workplace policy. State law does not impose a permanent physician collaboration mandate for ordinary NP practice.
Independent practices, community clinics, behavioral health organizations, specialty groups, and health systems can all be considered. Full practice does not make every NP a course match. The clinician still needs the correct population focus, patient access, schedule, and capacity to teach.
Students remain supervised. A preceptor's independent authority does not transfer to a learner. The approved ASU course, Edson requirements, site policy, and preceptor direction define the student's clinical role.
Verify Utah licensure through DOPL
Utah's Division of Professional Licensing, commonly called DOPL, licenses nurses and APRNs and provides official verification and application guidance. Check the proposed preceptor's active credential, specialty or population focus, and public record before moving into detailed placement paperwork.
Request a current CV and confirm the practice environment. Ask about patient ages, common conditions, typical weekly volume, available shifts, experience with students, and direct supervision time. A clinician can be fully qualified yet work in a setting that does not meet the particular course objectives.
Confirm who can approve students for the organization. Large systems may require a central education review, while smaller practices may decide locally. Either structure must be able to support onboarding and the documents Edson requests.
Use Utah's north to south clinical corridors
Salt Lake City and nearby West Valley City, Murray, Sandy, and Draper hold the state's largest mix of primary care, psychiatric, women's health, adult care, and specialty settings. Ogden and Layton create a northern Wasatch Front corridor, while Provo and Orem anchor Utah County.
St. George is the main hub in southwestern Utah, and Cedar City can add regional options. Logan supports a Cache Valley search. Students in eastern Utah may consider Price or Vernal, though a smaller market often means a wider radius and earlier outreach.
Mountain travel and winter conditions can change what looks like a manageable commute. Define the required number of weekly shifts and a realistic drive time before contacting sites. A location in a neighboring state needs separate program eligibility and Edson review.
Follow the correct Edson placement path
ASU's Advanced Nursing Practice DNP assigns placement responsibility by location. Students completing required clinical experiences outside Maricopa County identify the necessary sites and preceptors. Edson must review and approve a proposed Utah arrangement before the student begins clinical work.
Inside Maricopa County, placements are assigned through the current Edson process, with exceptions determined by Edson. That model does not assign a Utah site. Confirm the current submission timeline, preceptor documents, course criteria, and organizational agreement process for the target term.
Utah sites may require health records, background clearance, privacy education, learner orientation, or an affiliation document. Start those steps early because the site's acceptance and Edson's academic approval are separate decisions.
Connect Utah settings with concentration requirements
ASU's Advanced Nursing Practice DNP includes key NP concentrations in FNP, PMHNP, adult-gerontology, and women's health. The current FNP plan totals up to 1,125 clinical and residency hours, including 585 specialty practicum hours. Students should use the current program of study and catalog to verify sequence and eligible settings.
Other concentration totals vary. A family clinic may support broad FNP exposure, while PMHNP, adult-gerontology, and women's health courses need their own patient populations, services, and qualified preceptors. One Utah site may cover only one portion of the clinical plan.
ASU's program is hybrid and includes required Phoenix activities. It is not fully online. Combine Phoenix travel, Utah shifts, site onboarding, work, and possible preceptor changes in one calendar.
Compare physical and virtual routes
