Building a Vermont Preceptor Plan for ASU DNP Clinicals

AANP categorizes Vermont as a full practice state. Nurse practitioners who meet the state's licensure and transition requirements may evaluate, diagnose, treat, and prescribe without a permanent physician collaboration agreement. Vermont applies a transition-to-practice process to qualifying newer APRNs.

Verify whether a proposed preceptor has completed any applicable transition requirement and is currently practicing under the correct authority. Full practice can expand consideration of community, independent, and rural settings, but it does not make a clinician automatically eligible for an ASU course.

The student remains supervised at all times. The preceptor's independent practice authority does not transfer to a learner. ASU course objectives, Edson approval, site policy, and direct preceptor oversight govern the experience.

The Vermont Board of Nursing, within the Office of Professional Regulation, licenses nurses and APRNs and publishes official administrative rules. Use its records to verify an active credential, role, population focus, and any public discipline before advancing a preceptor candidate.

Next, request a current CV and ask about the clinical environment. Confirm patient ages, common diagnoses, service mix, weekly visit volume, shift availability, student experience, and time for direct supervision. The setting needs to support the particular ASU concentration and course.

Identify the person authorized to accept students for the practice. A health system may use centralized educational review, while a small clinic may handle the decision locally. Both need the capacity to complete site onboarding and Edson documentation.

Burlington and the surrounding area contain the state's largest concentration of health system, primary care, psychiatric, women's health, adult care, and specialty options. Montpelier and Barre form a central cluster, while Rutland serves a broad south central region.

Brattleboro and Bennington are important southern anchors. St. Johnsbury can support a Northeast Kingdom search. Smaller communities may offer broad family or adult care, but student capacity and specialty depth are often limited, so a wider radius can be necessary.

Vermont travel depends on roads, weather, and early shift times more than mileage alone. A site in New York, New Hampshire, or Massachusetts is a separate state location and requires its own program eligibility and Edson review.

ASU's Advanced Nursing Practice DNP separates placement responsibility by location. Students completing required clinical experiences outside Maricopa County identify their own sites and preceptors. Edson reviews and must approve the proposed Vermont placement before the student begins clinical work.

Within Maricopa County, placements are assigned under the current Edson process, with exceptions controlled by Edson. That process does not assign a Vermont site. Confirm current submission dates, site documents, preceptor credentials, and concentration-specific criteria for the intended term.

Vermont organizations may request an affiliation agreement, health documentation, background screening, privacy training, or orientation. Start site onboarding early and keep it distinct from Edson's academic approval decision.

ASU's Advanced Nursing Practice DNP includes key NP concentrations in FNP, PMHNP, adult-gerontology, and women's health. The current FNP plan totals up to 1,125 clinical and residency hours, including 585 specialty practicum hours. Confirm current sequencing in the program of study and catalog.

Other concentration totals and setting requirements vary. A rural family practice may offer useful breadth for an FNP course, while PMHNP, adult-gerontology, and women's health experiences need properly focused services and supervision. One Vermont practice may not meet every term's objectives.

The program is hybrid and includes required Phoenix activities. It is not fully online. Schedule Phoenix travel alongside Vermont clinical shifts, weather considerations, work, site onboarding, and possible use of multiple preceptors.

Virtual preceptorship may use supervised telehealth only if the course, site, state, patient location, supervision setup, and Edson acceptance allow it.
