Virginia also offers an autonomous practice pathway for qualified nurse practitioners who document at least three years and 5,400 hours of qualifying practice under a practice agreement. Clinicians who have not obtained autonomous status continue under the applicable state practice relationship.
Screen the proposed preceptor's current status rather than assuming authority based on years in practice. Confirm that the NP's practice arrangement, population focus, and prescribing status fit Virginia requirements and the site. Autonomous status is relevant to the clinician's practice, not a substitute for ASU course eligibility.
The student remains supervised in either setting. The ASU course, Edson approval, site rules, and approved preceptor define the learner's activities.
Verify Virginia APRN records and autonomous status
The Virginia Board of Nursing, working with the Board of Medicine where required, publishes advanced practice registered nurse resources and official verification. Review the candidate's active license, APRN role, specialty, autonomous status when applicable, and public record before preparing a full proposal.
Then request a current CV and evaluate the site. Ask about patient ages, common diagnoses, clinical services, visit volume, available shifts, student history, and supervision time. A candidate must fit both the population focus and the actual objectives of the ASU course.
Find the organizational contact who can authorize a student. Large health systems may use central education or credentialing teams, while independent practices may decide locally. The practice must still be willing and able to complete onboarding and required documents.
Break Virginia into realistic search markets
Northern Virginia has a dense mix of primary, psychiatric, women's health, adult, and specialty care, but traffic makes a precise radius essential. Richmond offers another broad clinical market. Hampton Roads, including Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Newport News, supports a large coastal search.
Charlottesville and Roanoke are useful western and central anchors. Winchester and the Shenandoah Valley can broaden the northern and western search. Lynchburg, Danville, and the Bristol-Abingdon area add regional possibilities for students outside the largest metros.
Crossing into Washington, DC, Maryland, West Virginia, Tennessee, or North Carolina creates a different licensing and program location. Confirm eligibility and Edson review for the actual site address rather than relying on the student's home address.
Use Edson's process for a Virginia placement
ASU's Advanced Nursing Practice DNP allocates placement responsibility by location. Students completing required clinical experiences outside Maricopa County identify their own sites and preceptors. Edson must review and approve the proposed Virginia arrangement before any clinical work begins.
Inside Maricopa County, placements are assigned through the current Edson process, with exceptions determined by Edson. That assignment model does not provide a Virginia site. Confirm current deadlines, concentration criteria, credential documents, and site agreement requirements for the target course.
Virginia organizations may require health documentation, background checks, privacy training, learner applications, and an affiliation agreement. Begin those steps early because the site's authorization and Edson's academic approval are distinct.
Fit Virginia exposure to the full clinical plan
ASU's Advanced Nursing Practice DNP includes key NP concentrations in FNP, PMHNP, adult-gerontology, and women's health. The current FNP plan totals up to 1,125 clinical and residency hours, including 585 specialty practicum hours. Verify current sequencing and eligible settings in the program of study and catalog.
Other concentration totals vary. A family practice may offer broad FNP exposure, while PMHNP, adult-gerontology, and women's health courses require appropriate services and qualified supervision. One Virginia site may satisfy only one stage of the degree plan.
The program is hybrid and includes required Phoenix activities. It is not fully online. Coordinate Phoenix dates with Virginia clinical shifts, onboarding, work, traffic, and any later need for a different specialty preceptor.
