Full practice supports a broad range of Washington settings
AANP categorizes Washington as a full practice state. Advanced registered nurse practitioners can provide core patient care within Washington licensure, education, certification, competence, and workplace policy. State law does not require a permanent physician collaboration agreement for ordinary NP practice.
That framework can bring independent offices, community health centers, psychiatric organizations, specialty groups, rural clinics, and health systems into the candidate pool. It does not settle academic fit. The preceptor still needs the right population focus, clinical services, schedule, and teaching availability.
ASU students remain supervised. The preceptor's independent authority does not transfer to the learner. The course objectives, Edson approval, site policy, and the approved preceptor define the student's permitted activity.
Use Washington State Board of Nursing records
The Washington State Board of Nursing licenses nurses and advanced registered nurse practitioners and provides official ARNP requirements and credential verification. Check the proposed preceptor's active license, ARNP role, population focus, and public record before preparing a placement submission.
Then assess the actual learning environment. Request a current CV and ask about patient ages, common conditions, clinical volume, weekly schedule, student experience, and direct supervision time. Confirm that the practice's services fit the specific ASU concentration and course.
Identify who can approve students for the organization. Washington health systems may use centralized education teams, while smaller practices may make decisions locally. Either setting must have the authority and capacity to complete onboarding and required documentation.
Choose a Washington corridor before contacting sites
Seattle and Bellevue provide the state's largest mix of primary care, psychiatric, women's health, adult care, and specialty services. Tacoma and the South Sound form another major market, while Olympia supports a separate search farther south. Everett and Bellingham add northern Puget Sound possibilities.
Spokane anchors eastern Washington. Vancouver can be useful in the southwest, but any Oregon site across the river is a separate state location. The Tri-Cities, Yakima, and Wenatchee offer regional options in central and eastern areas, often with different onboarding networks from Puget Sound.
Traffic, ferry schedules, mountain passes, and winter conditions can change a reasonable radius. Define practical drive time and required weekly shifts before outreach. Ask each organization how far ahead it accepts learners and whether it limits university partners.
Submit the Washington arrangement through Edson
ASU's Advanced Nursing Practice DNP separates clinical placement responsibility by location. Students completing required experiences outside Maricopa County identify the sites and preceptors they need. Edson must review and approve the proposed Washington arrangement before the student begins clinical work.
Within Maricopa County, placements are assigned through the current Edson process, with exceptions decided by Edson. That model does not assign a Washington experience. Confirm current deadlines, credential documents, concentration requirements, and site agreement procedures for the intended term.
Washington organizations may request an affiliation agreement, background review, health records, privacy education, and local orientation. Begin those tasks early because organizational permission and Edson's academic approval are separate requirements.
Fit the Washington site to the degree plan
ASU's Advanced Nursing Practice DNP includes key NP concentrations in FNP, PMHNP, adult-gerontology, and women's health. The current FNP plan totals up to 1,125 clinical and residency hours, including 585 specialty practicum hours. Students should verify the current sequence and eligible settings through the program of study and catalog.
Other concentration totals vary. A family practice may support broad FNP objectives, while PMHNP, adult-gerontology, and women's health courses require appropriate patient populations, services, and qualified supervision. One Washington site may meet only part of the plan.
The program is hybrid and includes required Phoenix activities. It is not fully online. Coordinate Phoenix dates with Washington shifts, onboarding, travel, employment, and possible changes among preceptors across terms.
Compare physical and virtual placement routes
We source physical placements and virtual preceptorship routes. A physical route can target a Washington region, specialty, schedule, and workable commute. A virtual route may use supervised telehealth only when the course, site, state, patient location, preceptor arrangement, and Edson acceptance all permit it.
A Washington search should separate Puget Sound travel from Spokane, Yakima, Tri-Cities, and other regional plans. Ferry routes, mountain passes, and clinic-day timing can change what is realistic. For a virtual component, identify patient locations, supervision, site workflow, and the expected encounter types so Edson receives a concrete clinical proposal.
