AANP classifies Wyoming as a full practice state. Qualified nurse practitioners can provide core patient care within their licensure, education, certification, competence, and site policy without a physician supervision or collaboration requirement imposed solely for NP practice.
Independent practices, rural health clinics, community organizations, specialty offices, behavioral health settings, and health systems can enter the search. Full practice does not mean every NP can precept every course. Patient mix, population focus, schedule, and teaching capacity remain essential.
The student remains supervised during clinical education. The preceptor's independent authority does not transfer to the learner. The ASU course, Edson approval, site policy, and preceptor oversight define permitted activities.
Verify candidates through the Wyoming Board of Nursing
The Wyoming State Board of Nursing licenses nurses and APRNs and publishes official practice guidance and verification resources. Check the proposed preceptor's active license, APRN role, population focus, and public record before asking the site to complete detailed documents.
Request a current CV and examine the learning environment. Ask about patient ages, common diagnoses, clinical volume, available shifts, student history, and direct supervision. A broad rural patient panel can be valuable, but it must fit the specific ASU concentration and course objectives.
Confirm who can authorize learners for the practice. A regional health system may use central review, while an independent clinic may decide locally. Either setting must be ready for onboarding and Edson documentation.
Plan around Wyoming's distance and regional hubs
Cheyenne offers the largest concentration in southeastern Wyoming and can support primary, psychiatric, adult, women's health, and specialty searches. Casper is a central hub with a broad regional patient base. Laramie adds another southeastern market, though its site pool is smaller.
Gillette and Sheridan provide northern options. Rock Springs can anchor a southwestern search, and Jackson serves a distinct western community with limited student capacity. Smaller towns may offer strong continuity and broad exposure but fewer backup clinicians or specialty services.
Wyoming distance, winter weather, and highway conditions require a conservative travel plan. Define weekly clinical days and maximum drive time before outreach. A Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, or Nebraska site is a separate location and needs its own Edson review.
Use Edson's process for the Wyoming proposal
ASU's Advanced Nursing Practice DNP assigns placement responsibility according to location. Students completing required clinical experiences outside Maricopa County identify the sites and preceptors they need. Edson must review and approve the proposed Wyoming arrangement before any clinical work begins.
Within Maricopa County, placements are assigned under the current Edson process, with exceptions determined by Edson. That process does not assign a Wyoming placement. Confirm current submission deadlines, preceptor documents, concentration requirements, and site agreement steps for the target term.
Wyoming sites may request health documentation, a background review, privacy training, learner orientation, or an affiliation agreement. Begin these tasks early because site permission and Edson's academic decision are separate.
Fit the Wyoming setting to concentration and hours
ASU's Advanced Nursing Practice DNP includes key NP concentrations in FNP, PMHNP, adult-gerontology, and women's health. The current FNP plan totals up to 1,125 clinical and residency hours, including 585 specialty practicum hours. Confirm the current sequence and eligible settings through the program of study and catalog.
Other concentration totals vary. A rural family practice may provide useful breadth for FNP preparation, while PMHNP, adult-gerontology, and women's health courses require appropriate services, patient populations, and qualified supervision. One Wyoming match may meet only part of the full plan.
The program is hybrid and includes required Phoenix activities. It is not fully online. Coordinate Phoenix dates with Wyoming shifts, weather contingencies, work, site onboarding, and possible use of more than one preceptor.
Evaluate physical and virtual preceptorship routes
